NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - If you saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers whispering to Al Gore when they accepted their Grammy Award for best rock album in February, that's the moment they committed to playing Live Earth.

Gore said he met with band members for more than an hour before this year's televised awards show, trying to persuade them to perform at one of the concerts.

While receptive to the idea, they weren't sure they could fit the July 7 concert into their schedule, Gore said Friday.

US 4th Circuit Court of Appeals Rules in Favor of US Resident Enemy Combatant's Right to Habeas Corpus

As the headline indicates, a US appeals court has ruled that a US citizen being held as an "enemy combatant" must be afforded the same habeas corpus privileges as other US citizens.

This is significant news, but could be overturned, since the "conservative" Bush administration is appealing the ruling to the US Supreme Court.

So happy to see them defending our liberties, aren't we...

NRA and Dems in DC Strike 'Deal' on Gun Background Checks

Lest we forget the broad proscription in the Second Amendment stating that the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, and the fact that if politicians and special interest groups would LIKE to infringe on the right to keep and bear arms, they can try to AMEND the Constitution, there is news that the NRA has struck a deal with Democrats in Washington on... background checks.

See what you think, and then consider that if someone does not want his background checked, even these seemingly innocuous and protective "background checks" are, strictly speaking, an infringement on the right to keep and bear arms. On balance, did the NRA do good or ill here? And why can't people be honest and actually try to amend the Constitution if they want to impose these supposedly salutory measures?

Thanks, 'Free Talk Live'. Gard to Fill-in with Julia for Ian and Mark, Friday, Saturday

He will be on with Free Stater Julia beginning at 7pm and will welcome Sheldon Richman, of the Foundation for Economic Education, to talk about the Republican Debates, energy policy, and even the travesty of US participation in World War I!

Republican Debate Post-Mortem: Giuliani, Romney, Duncan Hunter Score Points...

In the Republican Debate at St. Anselm College in Goffstown (NOT MANCHESTER) NH, Rudy Giuliani emerged as strong on defense, devoted to the issue, and interested in gaining "energy independence" with an "Apollo-like" program to develop new sources of energy and increase refining. Increasing the number of refineries in the US is easily done -- simply lift the hand of government off the backs of the oil refiners, and LET THEM MAKE NEW REFINING PLANTS!

As far as developing government programs to "set us on a course for energy independence"? Bad idea. Let the market answer to the demands of consumers. Giuliani and his cohorts were all aglow over their supposed adoration of local control of education (nice, but let's see them back up those words rather than just talk). They didn't think Washington should be telling local parents and teachers how to run their schools. Yet they cannot see their inconsistency when they do not give the same trust to energy consumers and producers. Why not let them decide for themselves? Why, if these supposed defenders of freedom truly believe in freedom, don't they get the federal government out of energy regulation, the same way they would like to get the federal government out of education regulation?

Republican Debate in NH - A Preview

Tonight Saint Anselm College in Goffstown, NH, will host the second Republican Debate, and it could prove to be a very important one for Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani and Ron Paul.

Senator John McCain is done, and was done before he started, due to his own constitutional makeup (he seems to be out of steam for the contest) and his stance on immigration. The Republican roots are up in ARMS about the new McCain "remedy" to immigration. While we here at the Conspiracy take a stricter, pro-freedom economic and Constitutional view on immigration (controlling immigration is not a federally enumerated power), we recognize that many republicans are irate at the lack of "enforcement" on the borders. McCain's participation in the new federal plan has killed any chance he once had.

Post-Dem Debate Stories - 1. They Are Massive Hypocrites 2. Lefty Writer Eric Alterman Gets What He Deserves

Here is the AP/Breitbart story on the posing of the Dems. Chris Dodd is particularly cute with his "restore the Constitution" blather. What a massive, deceptive, hypocritical squirrel this man sounds like. Bill (I guess I wasn't recruited by a pro baseball team when I was young) Richardson almost did him one better when he called for a federally mandated $40,000 per year minimum wage for teachers.

HAVE ANY OF THESE PEOPLE CONNECTED THE FREE MARKET, FREEDOM, and the LIMITATIONS PLACED ON THE FEDERAL GUB-MENT? ANY OF THEM?.... Hellooooooo?

Foul, sick, distasteful. But important to dissect. Listen to Free Talk Live tomorrow night (6-4-07) to get more. Gard will be with Ian and Mark to get deeper into it. For now, here is the piece on the wonderful saviors of the world in the Democrat party. Nice.

Vladimir Putin Warns US - Don't Help Europeans Build Missile Defense Shield

Pushing aside the argument of whether the US government should be using taxpayer money to help European nations build a missile defense shield, what does one make of Russian President Vladimir Putin warning that if such a plan is enacted, he will be FORCED to target European cities with nuclear weapons?

This report from the AP tells the tale:

Updated: 2 hours, 24 minutes ago

ROME - Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that U.S. plans to build a missile defense system in Eastern Europe would force Moscow to target its weapons against Europe.

The threat, in an interview published Sunday in Italy’s Corriere della Sera and other foreign media, marked one of Putin’s most strident statements to date against the U.S. plans and came just days before he is to join President Bush and other leaders at a Group of Eight summit in Germany.

Wall Street Journal Exposes Economic Idiocy of Having the Feds Dictate Immigration and Hiring Policies

In a free nation, businesses are FREE to hire whom they wish.

Coming soon to the Conspiracy, historical facts that support the thesis that there is no constitutional federal role for controlling immigration, that it was designed by the founders to be a state purview. We will also provide a systematic look at why state control of immigration would give us a better economy.

Here is the opening of the Journal piece:

The Legal Visa Crunch
The Senate bill is worse than current law for skilled immigrants.

Wednesday, May 30, 2007 12:01 a.m. EDT

The Senate immigration bill continues to take lumps from all political sides, with some criticisms more deserving than others. The vote last week to halve the size of a guest-worker program for low-skilled workers is a big step in the wrong direction; skimping on visas will only lead to more illicit border crossings. But the bill's handling of high-skilled immigration is even more troubling: The proposed changes are worse than current law.

Stunning - The USDA Is Trying to STOP a Private Cow Breeder from Testing All His Stock for Mad Cow Disease!

This is one of the most incredible examples of government oppression and backwards thinking in years.

The Bush Administration is actually trying to PREVENT a private beef provider from testing all his herd for Mad Cow Disease. The USDA is taking the man to court, and wants no more than the 1% that it tests!

The USDA is, prima face, absurd, unconstitutional according to a strict reading of the interstate commerce clause (which was designed to stop tariffs by one state on the products of others, not to give the federal government power over all interstate trade), and has often been shown to suppress the incentives for people to be vigilant for their own well-being. There has never been a more obvious example of why the USDA is not only bureaucratic and slothful, but counterproductive and dangerous.

Federal Government Tells Marvel Comics and Franklin Mint - Only WE Can Mess With Our Coins for Commercial Purposes

While the federal government continues to decrease the value of the money we make -- to such an extent that now pennies and nickels are worth less in their coin form than if we melt them down for their constituent metals -- Marvel Comics had a great idea: change some US quarters prior to the release of "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" to make them collectible!

Ixnay on that, says the gub-ment. Only WE can mess with money!

NH Senate Passes Rejection of Federal REAL ID Act... A Mitigated Success Due to Attached Bill

On Thursday, May 24, the NH Senate passed by a vote of 24-0 HB 685, which would pull NH out of the federal REAL ID act. This absolutely phenomenal move stands with the actions of a handful of other states that recognize as absurd the unconstitutional and economically backwards move by the federal government to force the states to adopt federal guidelines for their drivers' licenses. These guidelines would have included private data on the IDs, which would have been needed to board planes and/or trains, or enter federal buildings. The growing groundswell of opposition to this federal move -- the feral brainchild of Jim Sensenbrenner -- represents a push back against Sensenbrenner and people like US Senator Judd Gregg, who sent his acolytes to NH to lobby FOR REAL ID.

Congress May Lift Ban on Local Taxation of the Internet and Wireless Devices

Dispensing with the Constitutional questions arising from a federal ban on state and local internet taxation (see cases such as the NY "Miln" case from the 19th century for an example of the byzantine nature of some commerce issues), the Conspiracy needs to draw your attention to the simple economic threat of possible state and local taxation on the internet and wireless devices. In NH, we are no longer immune to big spenders in our state capital. Note this article from CNET for more information, and then tell your US reps and senators what you think!!

Pelosi and the Politicians in DC Debate Gas Price Controls -- AGAIN? Insulting.

We shall let our friends at Advocacy Ink say it this time.
_______

What To Do About Gasoline Prices?

Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her liberal cohorts’ solution to high gasoline prices is to take us back to the fuel shortages and long lines at the pump of the 1970s. As Ronald Reagan said to Jimmy Carter, “There you go again!”

Pelosi Lieutenant, Representative Bart Stupak (D-Michigan) is pushing a bill that provides for the implementation of price controls on gasoline and other hydrocarbon products in the guise of protecting consumers against “price gouging.”

The bill uses the phrase “unconscionably excessive” in relation to a fuel pricing. What is “unconscionably excessive” one may ask? Heaven only knows because the term is defined nowhere in the legislation.

The Republican Debate over Ron Paul at the Debates

Texas Congressman and Republican Presidential Candidate Ron Paul has received a great deal of criticism from fellow Republicans for suggesting that our continuted US presence in the Middle East has given terrorists like bin Laden fuel to recruit supporters.
