The mayor and council of a New Jersey township is calling for a "temporary" (ya, right!) curfew for everyone between 12 and 7 AM! Hey! Aren't those guys the criminals? Why are the residents being imprisioned?

I want to applaud the newsman for reminding the mayor of that "pesky Constitution"!

Two days ago, it was reported that the Pay Czar wants to "claw back" executive compensation from companies that received bailout money(see http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090817/bs_nm/us_feinberg ). With this precedent, where Czar Feinberg proclaimed, "anything is possible under the law," the powers to control compensation are now being expanded to include targeted businesses.  As reported in various sources today, the House Energy and Commerce Committee sent letters to insurers asking for the following information:

What if someone were to ask Ms. Shaheen if she would be willing to start her own FOR PROFIT, PRIVATE company to promote tourism to certain places, a, oh, we don't know, a kind of, uh, PUBLIC RELATIONS firm that could, uh, well, look for willing clients to pay freely for the service, rather than use tax money to fund half of it? How would she reply? Would she say, "Yeah! I'll just risk my own capital and see if I can give it a go!", or would she not even understand the premise of the question, because she simply sees this as appropriate, that it's just fine to seize other peoples' money to create a new "corporation" that she would like to start?

As one reads this piece, he is struck by how myopic the pop media are. Numerous times, they quote people like Fred Solop (perfect name), who says: "When you start to bring guns to political rallies, it does start to layer on another level of concern and significance."

Then there's Zippy the Pin-head -- sorry, Paul Hemke -- head of the Brady Coalition for Pin-heads. SORRY!, SORRY! The Brady Bunch. NO! Sorry! The, uh, Brady Campaign to Disarm Free People and Inspire More Violent Crime. Zippy said, "To me, this is craziness. When you bring a loaded gun, particularly a loaded assault rifle, to any political event, but particularly to one where the President is appearing, you just make the situation dangerous for everyone."

It's going to be a "private" organization that will be granted $3-4 billion in taxpayer cash at the outset, then set "on its own" to be operated like a non-profit. But guess what? What's fascinating about this is that Obama does not acknowledge the difference between disagreement in a free society based on individuals engaging in free market exchange, and disagreement in a sphere that is controlled by the poltical process and/or the majority.

In a free society, one can disagree and have a choice. If he opts not to do business with the person with whom he disagrees about a policy or product, he is free to withhold his money, and seek another person with whom to do business.

In the political sphere, even if one disagrees, he has no choice. If you disagree with President Obama or the majority in Congress, he/they will still do what they want. It's the difference between freedom and force.

The point is not that the US Constitution prohibits CONGRESS from estblishing a religion, or restricting the free practice thereof. (This, by the way, meant that localities and states were reserved the power to regulate religion, as bad as that sounds.) The point is that, regardless of whether one believes in God, NO INDIVIDUAL should have his money taken from him to support an education system that pits one religous person against another non-religious person who might not want his money taken to pay a school official to take time to pray. Sorry, but an ethical society would never place a non-believer, or a believer, in that position. It is the state, in its generic sense, that creates these problems.
