Culture in all its forms

I win!

Gard just notified me on my facebook profile that I won the trivia contest, winning $50 worth of itunes music, which I gather has been selected by the g-man himself.  The music pod was AWESOME!

REM are no longer shiny happy people

Michael Stipe had long ago disappeared up his own pretentious behind, so I can say I'm sorry to hear the news.

The music podcast that was 2 days too late.

I really enjoyed the new music podcast, but I'm a little sad.  Turns out Fitz and the Tantrums were into here in Columbia MO on Saturday and I missed them.

Awesome documentary on Paul Weller

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNqcEewTGYY

Documentary on Paul Weller from early 2010 (which I seemed to of missed when first shown), directed by Julian Temple who had previously directed the Filth & Fury documentary on the Sex Pistols.

It seems to me that the older Paul gets the better he seems, he certainly seems far more confident & relaxed in front of the cameras then he was 20 years ago.

I really like this documentary because Paul doesn’t just about the music, but talk about his love for London & British culture & sticks up for a multicultural Britain. In front I pretty much agree with everything expressed in this documentary.

The Brilliance of Shameless

Shameless has been one o the most successful British TV series of the past decade & its also been one of the most controversial.

Conservatives seem to think its a fly on the wall documentary about welfare spongers & left seem to think its a piss take of poor people.

Star Wars IP Disputes Settled by Jedi Counsel?

http://gizmodo.com/5823485/exclusive-inside-microsofts-fanboy-fantasy-the-star-wars-xbox-360

The above article is the second in two days that I've seen about Star Wars regarding intellectual property.  This story is about the guild that decides what get official sanction and is legally permissable to brand as a star wars product (while the guild collects rent).

The story linked to below is about someone that did not get approval from the Jedi Counsel when makeing Storm Trooper Masks, and the Jedi Counsel made it obvious that there is a light sabre in the room (or blaster).

Question for Who fans.

Which Album is better, Quadrophenia or Who's Next?  These are your only two choices.  Live at Leeds is the greatest live album, obviously.

Gil Scott-Heron RIP

Well the man who's often referred to as the godfather of rap has died

Paul Weller did a decent cover version of The bottle

Oh yeah as a celtic supporter I'd like to mention Gil Scott-Heron's father was the first Black player to play for Celtic.

Curtis's Critique of Ayn Rand

Over the past 20 years Adam Curtis has made some interesting documentary series, such as Century of Self & the Power of Nightmares.

His current documentary series entitled All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace kicked off last week & it began with a critique of Ayn Rand.

Actually libertarians could learn from the warning in Curtis's last documentary series The Trap

Shadow Line

Brilliantly scripted, brilliantly directed, brilliantly acted...

The Bionic Man is NOW a REALITY!

a unique social experiment, as he persuades one street in Preston to give up all council services for six weeks.

Brazil v. Fight Club: Your Thoughts

The top of my netflix queue

Now normally I don't have a lot of time for film.  However, after a recent discussion with Sophia Botha, I decided to make it a priority to watch Terry Gilliam's work of renown, Brazil as well as the Brad Pitt/Edward Norton film Fight Club.  I have yet to watch them, but both films have been put to the top of my queue on Netflix.  But as I don't have either of the films in my possession at the moment, I thought I'd ask my fellow conspirators for a comparative literary analysis of the films.
