We have long warned so-called "conservatives" that their zeal to close the borders would lead to a national ID which would be required to work.

The Senate bill (passed a few days ago) has this in it. The bill will likely not pass the House, but as long as the hardcore anti-immigration gangs in the GOP, and the union Democrats keep pushing for federal controls over immigration, this will be in the offing. It looks like such a system will be unavoidable in the next few years unless people who believe in freedom, free economics and the benefits of immigrants, and in the rules of the constitution (which doesn't allow the feds to be involved in immigration, only naturalization) don't win more to our side.
