According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the literacy rate for US college graduates has dropped nearly ten percentage points in ten years.

The report, cited in an article by Lois Romano, of the Washington Post, reveals that 41 percent of graduate students tested in 2003 could be classified as "proficient" in prose -- reading and understanding information in short texts. This was a drop of ten percentage points since 1992. For college graduates, the numbers were even more dismal. Wheras 1992 saw 40 percent who were proficient, 2003 saw only 31 percent proficient. In other words, American college graduates -- the recipients of the most government programs, funded by state and federal elementary and high schools programs, as well as the recipients of the most federal largess given out for government college grants and low-interest college loans -- are now WORSE off than they were ten years ago.

The fundamental disconnect remains. There is no correlation and certainly no causation that can be found when looking at government funding for education, and the results achieved. For decades, we have seen skyrocketing government seizure of wealth and redistribution for education, and the results have gotten worse and worse.

One man who warned of this problem was Sam Blumenfeld, author of such books as "The New Illiterates", "Is Public Education Necessary?", "NEA: Trojan Horse of Education", and "Alphaphonics".

Sam appeared on "Against the Grain" for nearly an entire hour, describing the gradual process that brought the US education system to its knees and saw the growth of illiteracy mushroom like a nuclear cloud.
