Remake of "V"
Anyone here like the original "V" from the 80's. I see that there is a remake coming out pretty soon.

Relinquish liberty for the purposes of defense in an emergency?
Why? It would seem that in an emergency, of all times, one needs
his greatest strength. So if liberty is strength and slavery is weakness,
liberty is a necessity rather than a luxury, and we can ill afford
to be without it—least of all during an emergency.

Indeed. I was never huge on the original, but this remake looks like it could have some very strong allegorical references to statism and socialism, to the nanny state and the "we will take care of you" salvation mentality that the state fosters in all forms. Besides, it's got Juliette, from "Lost" in it, sooooo, I MUST watch at least the first ep!
MUST!
:-)
Its got Morena Baccarin (Firefly)! She's even hot when she's an evil reptile from space!
I heard its not a remake but a sequel to the original mini series which will be confusing to folk here as the first two mini series were shown combined.
I did like the first mini series there was a lot of comparisons between the way the Nazis viewed Jews & the way the lizards in V viewed humans etc.
The creator Kenneth Johnson definitely wanted to create a series that was more thought provoking then just a shoot 'em up. Funny enough he was the original executive producer of the Incredible Hulk & if anybody remembers the Hulk didn't start off just centring upon Lou Ferrigno smashing things up.
Anyways back to V IU think I'd like to forget the second mini series & definitely the weekly series that followed...I saw an episode of it on the Sci-Fi Channel late one night recently when I couldn't sleep & its total shit, but by that point Johnson had left the project & it had descended into the oh so typical alien invasion type television series.
I liked the original. I remember that the Visitors had their own version of Hitler youth. And the one punk kid rose in the ranks and got real full of himself.
I was hooked after seeing Morena Baccarin.
Saw it tonight, and it's GREAT! The extent to which the producers and writers skewer statism and paternalism runs a wide and deep gamut, from socialized medicine, to Americorps, to the lapdog media sitting down for high-ratings interviews that offer no challenging questions posed to the politicians. It's also neat that the story can act as a sequel to the original, but it hasn't been overtly stated.
This show was really a surprise. The opening of it made me wonder if it would work, but they handled things well, and had a self-contained episode within the build-up for the overall mythos of the series.
I think this thing will really appeal to people who see the criticism within the stories!
Just watched it on Hulu.com. I agree with Gard. It was excellent. The journalist who sells himself out reminded me of Chris Matthews or Rush Limbaugh. Both sell-outs to their respective wings of the Establishment. I especially liked that a man of the cloth turned into a freedom fighter.
I especially liked that a man of the cloth turned into a freedom fighter.
The discussion in the church about his fears the "miracles" being performed by the Visitors changing the positive/uplifting Faith into the dangerous Devotion, followed by watching that exact thing unfold, was so very well done. Downright chilling.
As for the journalist, I read there's a struggle for redemption on the horizon - starting very soon.
You could tell the journalist was struggling with that decision. He got backed into a corner he didn't expect and had to weigh popularity to principles. I can see redemption for him. It will be interesting on how they play it out.
Yeah the discussion between the 2 priests was interesting. You had the old one who was trying to argue that the hope the Visitors bring is more important than the doubt/skeptism that the younger priest had a healthy ammount of. Its another example of the principles vs. comfort. The church experienced a boom in people, and this comforts/excites the priests. But knowing when the admiration goes beyond the boundaries of your principles is the issue here.
"I especially liked that a man of the cloth turned into a freedom fighter." Let me expand on this a little. Usually, movies and TV portary religious figures as evil hypocrites. Or the sympathetic ones usually question their faith or don't really believe in it anyway. So far, V has portrayed the priest pretty even-handedly.
I though the second episode was pretty good. It seemed like more groundwork was being laid. A lot of the characters are conflicted. The FBI woman, the priest, Morris Chestnut, the journalist to some extent, the alien auto mechanic and even the young V girl. The only character I have a problem with is Tyler, the FBI agent's son. In the first show he seemed like a nonconformist. But he fell in with the V's too quickly (maybe the girl has something to do with it). I guess they were going for the directionless teenager who found something constructive to do. Looks like he may have to choose between his Mom and the Visitors. (Family vs. the State).
I'm a HUGE fan of the original, from childhood. It was one of the few things I was allowed to stay up late to watch (every thursday night at 11pm, as I recall).
The two mini-series were great, the TV series not so great. Kenneth Johnston bowed out after the first mini-series (and recently wrote a book as his official follow-up to the first mini-series, ignoring the rest of the TV output).
I've heard mixed reports of the new series - some say it doesn't have the suspense the first mini-series had, as everyone knows the lizards are 'bad guys' from the start. I'm keen to watch it, of course, when it hits UK TV.
I'm a HUGE fan of the original,
Never thought you'd like big hair, shoulder pads & lip gloss ;)
i downloaded the remake last week & thought it were crap....apart from that actress who also plays Superman's cousin in Smallville
SHE IS CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You gotta love the old series where they chowed down on guinea pigs, mice, & other rodents. They'd swallow them whole and even with the cheesy early '80 special effects, it was still cool to watch when their throats would bulge out as they swallowed their prey.
Another "Firefly" alumni was also on the first 2 (that I know of) episodes of the remake of "V". Alan Tudyk, better known as Hoban "Wash" Washburne. They also seemed to have gotten the lady that played the ship's avatar, (Lexa Doig) in the Gene Roddenberry series, "Andromeda". She's a doctor and a member of the "Fifth Column", a group of visitors that decided to eschew the commands of their fearless leader, and instead chose to side with the humans.
It's presumably been picked up for a second season.
There's also the element of government acting on the surface, so benign and stating that they are only here to help (as Anna of the visitors did). Meanwhile she plotted the absolute ruin of the humans, without so much as an iota of remorse. I find the similarities between it and gooberment as it is here actually, to be somewhat chilling.
Humankind may only be free, absent the cruelty that is the state.
Just finished the first season, very cool! I'm hooked. gonna have to buy the boxset.
