The Reek Of Nationalism Is Almost Upon Us Thanks To The World Cup
I prefer to be in South Africa right now where the World Cup is being held because ironically I reckon they’d be less jino nationalism then there’s going to be here in England.
Its funny but 20 years ago it wasn’t as nad as it is now if you aren’t English living in England when the England football team qualify for the World Cup or the European Championships.
I’m already seeing the bumper stickers, the chavs wearing England garb & people flying England banners outside their homes, you know the World Cup is almost about to begin & there will be the reek of nationalism bearing upon all.
I’ve got nothing against anybody supporting their national football team, but here in England it often boils over into more then jinngo nationalism but into outright nationalistm being used as an excuse for violence.
Personally I was threatened with being glassed in a pub a few years back the last time England qualified for the European championships because I was wearing a kilt & wasn’t joining in the celebrations.
During the last World Cup a friend’s son was beaten up after an England game because he wasn’t wearing an England shirt.
Part of me is thinking to survive I should buy one of the cheapy England T-shirts being sold in my local supermarket & simulate into the mob so I can survive whilst England are still in the tournament.
I detest nationalism to me its very much the enemy of individualism, because its people hiding their insecurities & inadequacies behind a flag & false collectivist premise.
I do hope England do well this World Cup because it will make people happy, but unlike many people I’m not going to hold it against others if they don’t support England or support another national team.
