Pep's Musical Cornucopia!!!
First off, I just want to give props to Gardner for always providing good music for his shows, and continuing to explore the horizons. Like Gard, I'm a big Psychedelic Furs fan, and they were one of the first groups that motivated me to make a CD purchase* (I'm about a decade junior to Gard and while I own plenty of vinyl, I really got my start buying CDs, but more on my musical history some other time!!). It was also Gard's regard for the Furs that motivated me to provide him with the cowbell remix to Dumb Waiters. XD
I'm going to share my musical taste here. I will drop a lot of band names and media links, so feel free to shout back if there's anything you like, dislike, recognize, or find completely unfamiliar with or baffled by: I might be able to help!
Now to attack your senses with a whiplash of the familiar and the strange!!!
The singer of this band used to sell me my CDs:

Gogol Bordello. Played my next door neighbor's house, so I'm told.

And if that's not a kick in the pants, here's another one:

Thelonious Moog! Exhibit 1: Awesomeness:

And if you can't get enough:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o86Ffwcc6Zk&feature=related
I must say, though, that I was first attracted by Stark's solo performances, and those are not exactly easy to find.
N'Dambi: Great innovative artist expanding the bounds of soul.

Elvis Costlello: "Was it a millionaire who said imagine no possessions?" "Look at my eyes, look at my eyes, yeah, yeah yeah, yeah!"

Oingo Boingo. Stuff that people really can't get away with today without being crucified at the stake:

Cranes. Probably off of their best album:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5sJVXXYVPA&feature=related
Trio Kavkasia: To satisfy those looking for classical music recommendations try this group. They're not actually Georgian, but decided to learn their language and their music, and the unusual tuning associated with it. Start the player to hear some.

Black Moth Super Rainbow. It makes perfect sense.

Cocteau Twins. Great vocals, sonic exploration and soaring harmonies. Greatest band ever, IMHO. :P
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtBr5JKSuks
A haunting song. I remember playing it on a snowy overnight train ride. That guitar howls like nothing else!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjRalBi9z_8
One last gem:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65Y6G3rQUaA&NR=1
Harold Budd and Robin Guthrie - Neil's theme. It's really mellow. :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klkRmuY_wvQ
That's it for now. Too much candy at once rots your teeth. :)
Peppermint Pig
Vigilia Pretium Libertatis
Gogol Bordello put on an awesome live show.
Koop I've heard before a couple years ago I'll have to check it out again.
I have Elvis Costello and Oingo Boingo on vinyl.
The Specials are one of my favorite bands. Ghost town was in Shawn of the Dead, awesome movie.
I used to listen to the Vandals in highschool a lot but not so much lately.
Since we have similar taste in some music I'll have to check out the ones you posted that I haven't heard of.
I checked out the rest of the stuff you posted and a lot of it is too slow for me, but I did really like Thelonious Moog though.
Glad you found something! What can I say? I guess I'm just a low tempo kind of person!!! :D
I'll try to find a few more upbeat sort of things first that might better suit your palate...
The Tea Party - Lead singer has a bit of a Jim Morrison vibe going, albeit fairly uptempo. My brother is probably more of a fan than I am.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCye7v79Tz0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8-Q2CVEjNE
Catherine Wheel - A very underexposed band. I hear they do a cover of Mission of Burma's 'That's When I Reach For My Revolver' on a very rare album/cd. I'm still trying to get a CD copy of it myself. Any help appreciated! :)
Although it's just a 30 second clip, it's a good one:
http://www.last.fm/music/Catherine+Wheel/_/Little+Muscle
Here's a full music video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fS-H_zkBg1o
Fluorescein - Good short-lived band. Their only release is worth hearing, though.
Poor video and sound on this clip, and it's the only one I could find:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pV2plDVZSXU
Just let me know if you want to hear more and I'll work out a way for you to do so.
Meat Puppets. Decent musicianship here with a mix of country, surfy and punk arranging with a clearly non-contemporary writing and lyrical style. Several hits as one of the more notable 'modern rock' bands.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vr87Cr8_5fE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxpvsSode0k
Medicine - A noise pop band. You've been warned.
http://www.last.fm/music/Medicine/+videos/+1-73_bmAZ7B-w
That's Liz Fraser singing backup:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vE2JM31wnm0
Sleeping Dogs Wake - They don't take themselves too seriously, actually, which is a good sign when dealing with music in the genre, though this one certainly sounds serious and straightforward. This is a neat bit of hard goth/industrial. It's from the early nineties I think.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96wTnwc5BCo&feature=related
Symphony X - Oh gosh, some nice metal?? Why not?!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhh_JcaJnJA
Wonderful XD (I get a fat guy stuck in internet vibe from it, lolz):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUn4jXZko5E
OK. General stuff:
Big Audio Dynamite - The Bottom Line: A timely song given the economic situation, lol.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U11fg_aNncI
Weird Al is always good for a laugh:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nll8-kSlq6c
Musical Youth - Bit of a one hit wonder with this familiar cover :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFtLONl4cNc
M83 - Started putting out some melodic noise along the lines of what Lovesliescrushing does, but then did a few synth pop/shoegaze releases with professional videos that are just as perplexing as the Black Moth Super Rainbow ones.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9yvItZAjfY
Lovesliescrushing is a melodic noise chillout sort of group. I first picked up their stuff around 96 or 97. Hypnotic, distorted, and haunting. :)

This last group of artists distribute their music freely and they're not too well known. They're predominantly electronic sequencer types:
Aleksi Virta. These are from Aleksi Virta's "..Meets Torsti At The Space Lounge", a great free download. You can find all of these downloads at the monotonik label site.
There's some nice samples here, such as some Inframan!!!!!!!
ftp://mirror.support.nl/pub/mono/mp3/%5Bmtk123%5D-aleksi-virta-09-dragon...
Kind of a ghost town feel. A funky breaking beat with flute.
ftp://mirror.support.nl/pub/mono/mp3/%5Bmtk123%5D-aleksi-virta-11-prince...
Aleksi Eeben - Another Aleksi. He puts out great free downloadable music. He's from the chiptune/demoscene/sequencer school of music which makes me feel right at home...

Coax - Another good sequencer.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJHwE1zNqWo
Malty Media - An electronic collaboration group. Very little output, but some interesting items so far.
I will end with a goodnight, from channel 2 :)

Take it easy! Until next time!!!
DUDE!
I love "Ghost Town"! I was so happy when they used it in "Shawn of the Dead". There's another tune called "Ghost Town", just put out by Shiny Toy Guns, and I really like that. Totally different, great stuff.
I also really love the Cocteau Twins. "Lorelie" is one of the most sensually evocative songs I've ever heard, and "Wax and Wane" is amazing. I've love to see them work with Portishead and Goldfrapp.
Of course, I'm also a huge fan of PIL - Black Rubber Bags, Black Rubber Bags, Black Rubber BAAAAAAAGS!
Do you guys like "Girls Against Boys" or "WIRE"?
Oh, and I've really been getting into Fu Manchu recently.
Hasta!
G!
Always sorta liked PiL over the years, but never really got into them.
I used to hear Fu Manchu a lot on the XM station Fungus 53. As for the rest. I'm checking them out right now.
Unfortunately the Cocteau Twins are disbanded, so tough luck seeing that happen. All of them are still active musically I believe. Robin Guthrie is still putting out some great work (two soundtracks and at least three albums, If I recall correctly), and a number of his releases are collaborations with Harold Budd, who worked with the Cocteau Twins on 'The Moon and the Melodies', which is an excellent, highly recommended album. Liz has been involved in various styles of music since the Twins, though I haven't purchased any of that yet, except for two of the Lord of the Rings soundtracks, where she does a bit of vocal work.
Further listening: An excellent fan? cover of Guthrie & Budd's 'Snowfall' from the Mysterious Skin soundtrack collab:

Take a trip back about 20 years and you have this from The Moon and the Melodies:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sf9jk6qk6TI&feature=related
Elizabeth Fraser's solo work 'At last I am free' (a cover):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVj-BA0Zufk
As you may be aware, Liz has featured with many artists over the years. Most will probably recognize her work with Massive Attack. She's done some work with Peter Gabriel, Yann Tiersen, and Medicine, as noted in an earlier post (see if you can recognize her voice in Time Baby III). She's also worked with the late Jeff Buckley, who is considered something of a peer in terms of vocal talent.
Ah, here's the Peter Gabriel cameo, and it's live too :) :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbqUyZdKM0o
Tiersen and Fraser - Kala (there's studio material at the start, but the whole song eventually does play)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UpFB69sLkE&feature=related
Buckley and Fraser - All Flowers In Time
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41GsVR7Rmlk
I'm not familiar with Girls Against Boys, Wire, or Fu Manchu. I just took a brief listen to each. So far I like all of them, though I was particularly impressed with Fu Manchu's 'We Must Obey'.
WE MUST OBEY!!! The riffing after 2:02 is nice!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SH9NFTwf83k
I'll keep an eye on these artists. Thanks for the recommendations Gardner!
Anyways, I didn't mean to make this another big music posting. It hurts to sit here and type since I pulled my back shoveling snow, so I gotta go take it easy. I'll be back with some new recommendations later in the week!
Hey Gardner, I really enjoyed your music podcasts. Don't think I didn't notice that bit of live genesis you threw in there! Good job. :)
...Well, my back is feeling better now, though I'm still taking it easy to avoid injury. I put off posting anything until now, so how about some more tunes??
Aztec Camera - Oblivious. The music video appears out of sync to me, and it's really retro, but the song is awesome. I read in the comments that this was written when Roddy was 17:

Glad you posted Ian Dury, too. He was a pretty cool frood who really knew where his towel was.

Sorry for the lack of updates!!! Perhaps I can begin the redemption with some up and coming artistry?? As you may know, I'm a fan of netlabels... mostly out of necessity, but also as a means to satiate my hunger for new sound and material.
So, not too long ago I found out about this one group, Karp0ff / Kaspar0ff. The lead performer is a talented pianist and vocalist, living in Russia I believe. Through a little back-tracking, I was able to find they had a Youtube channel, and even started out by posting cover songs... Not to diminish their original work (which is fantastic, IMHO), let's begin with their live cover of 3 Nirvana songs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErSWsvG2Tw4
Here he is performing Muse's "New Born"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-u1oxXmlddY
Here is a clean audio recording where he covers System of a Down's Toxicity, solo with a piano and some production dubbing of vocals (He thoroughly and stylistically makes this song his own here, and that's high praise given all the lukewarm cover songs most bands put out):
http://ia310830.us.archive.org/3/items/ToxicitysystemOfADownPianoCover/s...
As a sign of good showmanship, I am building you up to the crescendo! Here is an original track by Karp0ff / Kaspar0ff on the Foot side of the Bump Foot netlabel, which also includes a music video (EXPLICIT VIDEO WARNING! :) ):

The Album is FREE. So why not check it out??? http://www.archive.org/details/foot085
More great music when I get to it... hey, I should ask Gard if I can blog my music finds! :)
Be seeing you!!!
Can't go wrong with he Vandals. I always wanted to start a punk band and call ourselves the Visigoths.
I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.
The question isn't who is going to let me; it's who is going to stop me.
Paul Heaton once described The Beautiful South as 'everyone's second favourite band'. It made me smile.
Haha, during the mid to late nineties, I would have to say that was correct! Beautiful South was always one of the half dozen bands I gave high praise to.
Very true - I remember those days well!
The Beautiful South always seemed to be one of those bands that seemed to always have a song in the charts, but rarely broke the top five.
I saw them live, once, at a festival (FEILE 94, I belive). They were very relaxed and enjoyable to watch. Heaton was never without a pint of beer.
Their attitude (but not necessarily their music) reminds me of Scottish distortion-strummers, TEENAGE FANCLUB. Check them out - their stuff has a beautiful, lazy, melodic vibe that reminds me (a little) of TBS.
I fell in love with a young lady from Ireland to the Beautiful South. They are brilliant, and bring back very poignant memories. That was in 1995.
On this topic. I went to high school with a guy who started a band here in Australia called thesecondthat.
You guys seem advanced in your musical tastes. Granted since I've joined this awesome site, I've been developing a sudden craving for such awesome music!

Have a listen see what you think. They are established somewhat but in my view just waiting to be discovered!
