I have an opportunity to see one of the earliest and seminal bands to comethat created the Punk sound, the New York Dolls. They are playing in Salt Lake City on 30 May 2009.
I am wondering if it will be worth going to see them. When bands re-form and are highly publicized, it seems that they lose a lot of what made them great. For example, when you see a band like the Sex Pistols reform, and they play on Jay Leno (co-incidentally the same time Ron Paul was on), they didn't seem to have that intensity which initially drew me to them as artists.
I also think that Salt Lake City, being what it is, (at the apex of self-repression/gov't opression), will stifle the bands creativity and energy.
When I go to a show, I let it all hang the fuck out. I'm a freak. So, if I go, I will go and be myself, no matter what. But I hate to be disapointed.
FURB, I missed the dolls when they played Belfast about 5-6 years ago.
From what I heard, they put on a good show.
I'd jump at the chance to see them - go for it an enjoy it for what it is! :)
GO!
Gotta take the opportunity to see David Johansen! I like that song from their most recent disc, "Like Monkeys". I bet they're a blast to see live!
Did you see the Damned?
The Damned don't have any dates scheduled in Utah (suprise, suprise!).
Spoiler alert re: the film "New York Doll"
The film has about a five minute section dealing with the trepidation people feel when going to see a band that is reformed after many years apart. I think I will go to this show.
Now for the spoilage on the film.
I watched this flick mainly about Arthur "Killer" Kane, the original bassist for the dolls. Dude converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after seeing David Johansen in Scrooged (which spurred him to get f'ing wrecked on peppermint schnapps, beat his wife with cat furniture and jump out a third story window.
The band had been broken up for forever, and dude was living in squalor. Then he gets some e-mails from some babes in france saying they were going to see him perform in London. He calls Morrissey, and finds out about the show. Killer Kane hadn't playing in forever. His various axes had been in pawn for like a 5 years or longer. Church member's gave him the money to get his stuff out of pawn.
He travels to London, plays like a statue (which was his way anyways). Everyone has a great time, and he gets back to his place in Calif. He drops dead like 2 days after he gets back from leukemia. WoW!
Whoah... great story.
One question, what the hell was Morrissey doing advising the Dolls?
You could have replaced 'Morrissey' with 'Dr Who' and I wouldn't have blinked.... but MORISSEY?!
lol
My guess is that Morrissey was attracted to the glam aspect of the NY Dolls, as they were perhaps the first cross dressing band ever to make it somewhat big.
Just so you all know, the dolls pussied out on the show. WTF?
That sucks, man.
It almost sucked as much, though, when Gerry Only of MISFITS did turn up at a recent Belfast gig.
It wasn't the music - it's always great - but the fact that he now employs someone to come on stage and mop his brow. A punk fail, in my book! lol
Oh, and he treated the audience to a 'love across the divide' speech. Patronising, or what...
That almost makes me wretch just reading it.
