"The Market for Liberty" by Linda & Morris Tannehill, is the Book of the Month on http://www.freedombookclub.com .  I have heard Ian Freeman on FTL sing the praises of this book.  I look forward to reading this.  Anybody have insights on this.  It hasn't arrived from amazon.com yet, and I'm chomping at the bit!

Furb,

If you just can't wait for the hardcopy to arrive, you can get Ian's audiobook rendition for free here:

It's definitely worth a listen.

Since now Gardner's book is book of the month, I'll be telling the membership about the free ausio version of "Market for Liberty."

Altruism is a parasitic idea.

I was thinking today, whilst reading in the Tannehill's book, "The Market for Liberty," about my aunt. She is a democrat, and a very giving person. However, the point made in the book, in chapter two "Man and Society" (page 13) dealing with the idea of altruism as a parasitic moral ideas made me think of her as a victim of a parasite.

It appears to me that the conditioning that my aunt received throughout her life encouraged her to embrace altruism and statism. The embrace of altruism has encouraged her to resent doing favors for, or making allowances for other people pursuing their own self interests. I don't think she realizes the bitterness that is the fruit of her ideology.

She probably would be much happier with her life, had she not suppressed her desire to pursue her own interests to her maximum (and immense) potential.

Well, I just finished the Market for Liberty.  I think, of all the topics covered in this short book, the last chapter is the best.

I don't want to give away the end, for those of you that have not yet read/listened to the book, but it's prescriptive action is right up my alley.  I loved the ending, but the middle and beginning bits seemed a bit dry to me.  I shall be writing a review of this, and posting it in various lobes of the hive-mind.

It's on my list of books to read.

I don't want to download the audio, as I'm currently juggling so many podcasts (LIBERTY RADIO UNDERGROUND, LIBRARY OF THE LIVING DEAD, FANGORIA, LC, FTL, ANTI-WAR RADIO etc. etc.)!

Damn you podcasters, and your plethora of GRADE-A material! GRR!
