On my journey to libertarianism, many people have influenced me.   But I owe one person a special mention.  Howard Katz was an author and publisher of an investment newsletter.  He wrote a few books in the '70's.    One book of his I happened to pick up around 20 years ago was "The Warmongers".  The book was part history lesson and part economics lesson.  It was there where I first saw the name, Murray Rothbard.  From there, a whole new world was opened up to me.

Mr. Katz's blog, thegoldspeculator.blogspot.com, hadn't been updated in a while.  Looking around the internet, I unfortunately learned of his passing.  He was born in Rhode Island, earned a Math degree at Harvard and most recently settled in New Hampshire.  He was a little too much of a Randroid for me, especially with his defense of Israel.  But his revisionist views on U.S. economic history eclipsed all that.  One of his best articles was "How the Commies Stole Thanksgiving".

Thanks Howard.

Relinquish liberty for the purposes of defense in an emergency?
Why? It would seem that in an emergency, of all times, one needs
his greatest strength. So if liberty is strength and slavery is weakness,
liberty is a necessity rather than a luxury, and we can ill afford
to be without it—least of all during an emergency.

Thanks for this information. I knew of him, but hadn't known he passed away. It's never good to lose another voice for freedom and markets.

Oh, no! My wife and I are very saddened to hear this. Howie was our neighbor, and Gard's neighbor, too. We used to hang out at a local cafe in Milford, now closed. I first met Howie at a Ron Paul breakfast 3 years ago. I had been meaning to ask him about his health theories as he was big into that. Howie is the one of whom I spoke in my post on government monitoring of transactions http://libertyconspiracy.com/treasury_monitoring_all_usforeign_transactions (BTW, the Patriot Act required an oil company to run a background check on me so that I could pre-buy fuel to heat my home!)
