For those of you who don't know Joel Skousen, he is a political analyst, friend and support of Ron Paul and a designer of high security residences and retreats.  He is critical of his fellow Mormons Jon Huntsman and Mitt Romney.  I've heard him on at least one podcast.  So maybe Gard can try to get him on.

Here is his take on the current debt ceiling issue.  He makes a point overlooked by nearly all.

"THE DEBT CEILING AS BALANCED BUDGET AMENDMENT
As the arbitrary and unnecessary deadline of August 2 for the supposed US default approaches, the Obama administration is threatening to shut down the government. His biggest direct threat is to claim the US will have to default on its bonds and that Social Security checks will not go out. These actions are specifically unnecessary and the President knows it. The government still has income coming in. All it has to do is stop spending more than it takes in. In fact, the debt ceiling limit is already the law of the land, and serves as a balanced budget amendment. There is no need, as Republicans insist, to pass one. As of August 2, the government is required to stop spending more than the government takes in. Isn't that what a Balanced Budget Amendment is for?"

Relinquish liberty for the purposes of defense in an emergency?
Why? It would seem that in an emergency, of all times, one needs
his greatest strength. So if liberty is strength and slavery is weakness,
liberty is a necessity rather than a luxury, and we can ill afford
to be without it—least of all during an emergency.

It could be fun to listen to Brother Skousen. Skousen is also a frequest guest at CPAC, and organizer of an annual event called Freedom Fest, which is held in Las Vegas.

I don't know how much being a Latter-day Saint informs Skousen's views on government finance.  I am a member of the same church as Brother Skousen, but I hope that coercive government fails, and that people adopt individual sovereignty.

If Mr. Goldsmith does get Brother Skousen on, I'd love to have him answer questions about the his position on the Church's 12th Article of Faith, whhich states that the Church (and it's members) believes in being subject to governments.

There is an interesting blog article about this, with moderated discussion which may be interesting to y'all.

I didn't know you were LDS.  I don't know how Skousen's religious view inform his politics but I think he is pretty much a minarchist.  Although he calls himself a conservative/libertarian.

Incidentally, I don't know if you're a Sci-Fi fan but Glen Larson, the creator of the original Battlestar Galactica, is LDS.  I believe he incorporated some Mormon doctrine into the show.
