I would recommend a FEE (www.fee.org) podcast that I am in the middle of.  It's entitled "The Constitution as Counter-Revolution".  This is not a new subject for me but so far the talk is interesting.  What was so bad about the Articles of Confederation, anyway?

Relinquish liberty for the purposes of defense in an emergency?
Why? It would seem that in an emergency, of all times, one needs
his greatest strength. So if liberty is strength and slavery is weakness,
liberty is a necessity rather than a luxury, and we can ill afford
to be without it—least of all during an emergency.

It's funny how things are relative.  I've always thought how much better off these United States would be if we would only adhere to the constitution.  I still contend we'd be a damn sight better off if congress stuck to the 18 enumerated powers it was given.

That being said, it seems hard to argue with the fact that the constitution represented a consolidation of national power.

Isn't it funny how Washington and Lincoln are revered in our government schools?  Up until recently, they each had federal holidays in their honor.  I guess if the state reveres someone, you better start wondering why.
