Atlas Shrugged: A Review by J. Neil Schulman
from Rational Review, here is J. Neil Schulman's review of Atlas Shrugged part 1.
First Impressions of Atlas Shrugged: Part 1
Here is the excerpt that really brought the value of the movie to me. I plan to see it, if it is shown in my area.
There is, in the movie, a new railroad bridge made out of a new kind of steel - lighter, stronger, and cheaper than steel - and this bridge is elegantly simple.
Atlas Shrugged: Part 1 is that bridge.
If you've loved the novel and understand the limits of independent film, you should appreciate the film adaptation.
I love the novel and came out of the theater thinking, "This movie is Atlas Shrugged."
Industrialist/inventor, Henry Rearden, repeatedly asks one question of a government official who wants to pay him any figure just to protect existing industry from his new product. Rearden repeatedly demands, "Is it good?"
Atlas Shrugged: Part 1 is good.
If you're not already a fan, be prepared for something you've never seen in a movie before: a fundamentally honest depiction of the nature of the struggle between those who pull and those who ride free in this country ... and why Ayn Rand, speaking from the grave, has shown us why both honest working for profit and true charity from the heart are destroyed by a malignant virus called "self-sacrifice."
I'm going to see it Friday.
"Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe."
Frank Zappa
I saw the film last night. I went in after reading a snippet from Roger Ebert, where he said it was terrible, so I new I was going to like it. Roger Ebert is an associate of Oprah Winfrey's, so I new it was going to be good.
I actually liked the film more than I liked the book. I'll try and elaborate a little more in a blog post to follow.
It might be fun to do a roundtable discussion about the film v. movie if anyone is interested, e-mail me at FURBjr@gmail.com
I've seen media reports saying the film has been a box office flop. They really are out to destroy it, I wonder why? :)

I went on a Wednesday night. Including my wife and I there were 6 people in the theatre for the 7 PM screening. That was the only disappointing thing about the movie.
I talked to one of the couples after the movie, and they both spoke highly of the film.
Now, I'm not an objectivist, and though I like Rand some, I'm not a fanatic (although I love the term Rand-roid); however, I really, really liked the film. In fact, I liked the film more than I liked the book.
*ETA: I just checked my e-mail, and got a message from Francisco D'Anconia's personal assistant asking for help promoting the film on twitter.
Go see this film. If you don't know where it is playing, go to this link: http://bit.ly/ASthea
(put your city in or your zip to bring up a google map of theatres in your area).
it appears Atlas Shrugged has bombed at the box office
Ah well that's capitalism for you
Can't say I've ever been a fan of Ayn Rand & anyways the greatest libertarian film ever made was Brazil & it can't be matched

I went to it very skeptical that it could do the book justice, but it actually was not bad. It's like the book at hyperspeed. I do recommend it.
The video is due to be released on November 8, 2011 for those interested. I've pre-ordered the special edition, as a christmas gift for my wife.
