Feds Want Ban on cell Phones for Truckers
Let's compare the private individuals the feds want to coerce to the government agents. Those police officers who have to make calls and look up license plate numbers on computers while they're moving... Maybe they should be required to bring their cars to complete stops when using anything that might take their eyes off the roads.
And god forbid someone actually turn on his radio or glance at scenery.
Government cannot respond to our interests the way the private market can. While many chatterers will be on radio talking about whether or not cell phones in trucks are safe, and they will recite many stories about distracted drivers (and there are many!), the root of the issue will be avoided. It is this: the management of the roads has been usurped by government. If it were not in government hands, there would be privately run roads where we coul dhave more responsiveness to customer desires for safety and convenience. Reahing the dynamic balance would incentivise private road managers to allow for variation. In some cases, you might have roads that allow cell phones, in some, they might not. If government were not involved in road management and construction, we would probably already have highways devoted to big trucks and separate highways devoted to cars and vans and small trucks. Looking at it further, those lanes would probably be split into "Fast/Good Driver Lanes" and "Slow/Bad Driver Lanes", etc., whereby people with differing skills and coordination could select different lanes and not be hampered or firghtened by others. Older people would be able to drive sloooooooowly and people used to the German Autobahn could get away from them.
Ahh, but that utopian ideal stems from a recognition that government is an impediment to individual moral action and the reflection of those choices in the free market. Far be it for the Secretary of Transportation to recognize the evils of his own bureaucracy!
