As a pagan I am amazed to find there is a theater company in Scotland that is selling shares to a play based on an ancient pagan ceremony and two films called the Wicker Man. For those who are unaware of the ceremony or the plot it involves an impending important human sacrifice in order to help the crops grow and the police investigation of it. This sacrifice of a king or a virgin was a common theme in ancient times in almost all religions including Judaism. Sometimes this sacrifice was every year. Some others would have it just when the crops failed.
After all who had more power and responsibility than the king? He lived too well and must pay for failures. You have to give credit to our ancestors in the good old days. They were solid on term limits. They were also good on accountability and punishing kings who bring bad luck. This may have been the beginning of that great tradition of firing as a way to clear out deadwood. On the other hand it could have been a way of offering the best contribution to propitiate the Divine. This motif is also seen in Christianity with the annual sacrifice of Christ.
Despite the potential bad publicity repercussions pagans have long been fascinated by the film’s re-incarnations. Perhaps it’s because of all the horrible history about the burning of the witches. There is a story in the pagan blog “The Wild Hunt” about this new theater project. Pagans are warned by all in their craft that human sacrifice carries the most horrible of condemnations. It is considered to be hopelessly tacky. I agree. As a comedian I have discovered better ways of cutting up and roasting people on stage.
There are other rumors that if you buy a share in this film project you get included in a lottery to be the king. Virgins are an endangered species so therefore are protected and will not be picked. I recommend that everyone buy a share to reduce your chances of being chosen by lot. Dangerous fires can spread because of a draft. Noted and unknown, popular and shunned are all eligible. Flamers and fagots are sometimes the first to the fire no matter how fuelish or foolish it is!
It’s a great honor to be chosen and you’ll be on center stage. Before that you'll be treated like a king for a year. As we all can see the crops (the economy) aren't doing so well and we all have to reduce waste and bureaucracy. Isn't this what the Obamination stimulus package should be all about? Are we all over-compensating? Or is the economy over-heating?
We all have to make sacrifices! So let’s start at the top and have them lead. Show the Gods our chosen leader’s dedication of themselves to the community! They say that they are the best in our land so therefore they are an appropriate offering to our Gods!
We all know that something must be done to promote new growth. Drastic measures may be needed and why not sacrifice a king, especially since he requires sacrifices from us? In the film the chosen one is fittingly a government employee. He is placed in a wooden cage above everyone and roasted to the cheers of the crowd. I would not have anything to do with such choices in Burning Times using fiery ends. But I can certainly reminded of a previous life in that time of terror the grilling of suspects.
This does bring back a burning desire to be inflammatory. The government in this era has lit a fire in us all. We do have to re-ignite the economy. We could use as tinder tender stock offerings from General Motors, Chrysler, AIG, Goldman Sucks etc.
We are all looking for new sources of energy. So maybe lighting up old farts could be the answer. There seems to be a constant renewable supply and it also gets rid of garbage. There seems to be a methane in this madness in its ancient religious roots. Even the Christians worship a burning Bush!
In these modern times isn’t it the media’s job to hold the king’s feet to the fire? And aren’t we all media? Isn’t this the reason that Prometheus stole fire from the Gods? Light and heat are essential to freedom and life. After all, the king would certainly do the same to us if he had the chance. One way to mediate this situation is to media hate this situation comedy. Since I’m media I can take part in this old tradition by carrying the torch of Liberty to bring light to the cage of tyranny. I have found a new match for an old ritual. Anyone here have a light?
