Just bought a copy of The Omega Man for me one of the classic 70s disutopian classic & for me personally its also a libertarian analogy.
For those who haven't seen 'The Omega Man' starring Charlton Heston you might of seen the remake 'I'm Legend' with Will Smith.
Though I think Will Smith put in a great performance I thought the remake was in fact rather dull & so as you might guess I prefer the original Omega Man.
Yes it's a little outdated & clunky but Heston always processed great on screen presence & I've long identified with the film.
The synopsis of both films is that there's been a worldwide plague which in 'the Omega Man' has killed off the vast majority of humans & those left have become nocturnal homicidal mutants. In the remake 'I'm Legend' those who survive are more like zombie vampires. In both films there's a military scientist who managed to inject himself with the antidote & of course has to fight off the mutated humans trying to kill him.
In 'I'm Legend' the muted humans are as I say like zombies & don't appear to have any intelligence only the need to feed & really all 'I'm Legend' happens to be is a zombie romp which isn't a libertarian analogy & as I say I thought it was a rather dull film. But in the Omega man the mutated humans do have intelligence & have formed a cult wanting to kill off the world before the plague, which Charlton Heston represents & for me is a libertarian analogy.
I remember about 8 years ago somebody asked me what it meant to a libertarian & I replied by asking have you ever seen the film of The Omega Man? I've often felt that that I'm somebody trying to get on with my life but I'm constantly getting hassled by individuals zombified by the cult of the nanny state in attempt to enslave me, just as Charlton Heston's character is in The Omega Man.
Of course somebody will no doubt inform me that 'The Omega Man' was in fact a remake of 'The Last Man on Earth' starring Vincinent Price, which I confess is a film I've not seen. But I'm aware that 'The Last Man on Earth', 'The Omega Man' & 'I'm Legend' are all based upon the Richard Matheson book I'm Legend, Matheson also wrote several episodes of The Twilight Zone & like many episodes of The Twilight Zone the book I'm Legend has a great twist.
