I get asked this quite a bit so I thought whilst I remembered I should jot down the answer
Okay I know most people use Utorrent as their default peer to peer & sure its great for downloading video, but the best for MP3 I’ve found is Soulseek.
Its non commercial & tends to be used by folk into alternative music, its where I’ve got all the best Paul Weller & New Model Army live bootlegs.
Plus the same version has worked on XP, Vista & windows 7.
